An overview of the most important news in AI on June 2023.
McKinsey: Generative AI Can Add up to $4.4 Trillion in Value to the Global Economy
McKinsey’s recent report, “The Economic Potential of Generative AI: The Next Productivity Frontier,” explores the transformative capabilities of generative AI and its potential economic impact.
Experts examined 63 use cases where the technology can address specific business challenges. By automating tasks and augmenting human creativity, this technology is projected to add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion in annual value to the global economy, with 75% of that value falling into four areas: customer operations, marketing and sales, software engineering, and R&D.
According to McKinsey, generative AI has the potential to “change the anatomy of work,” with a greater impact on knowledge work and occupations with higher wages and educational requirements. Work automation could add 0.2 to 3.3 percentage points annually to productivity growth, resulting in half of today’s work activities likely to be automated between 2030 and 2060, with a midpoint in 2045. This will require workers to shift their work activities and change their job roles, which is likely to involve support measures for retraining and acquiring new skills.
OpenAI Plans to Launch an App Store for AI
Open AI is reportedly planning to launch an app store that will enable developers to sell their AI models built on top of OpenAI’s models, The Information reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The move is aimed at enterprise customers, who often customize ChatGPT for specific uses. The marketplace would allow developers to offer their custom AI models to other companies and users.
The report suggests that some of OpenAI’s customers, such as Aquant and Khan Academy, may consider offering their ChatGPT-powered AI models on this marketplace, which could help OpenAI expand the reach of its technology to a broader customer base.
Apple Introduced an AR Headset, Apple Vision Pro
Apple unveiled its augmented reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, at WWDC 2023. The device uses visionOS, which features a 3D user interface navigated by finger tracking, eye tracking, and speech recognition. Users can simply look at objects to interact with them, pinch their fingers together to perform actions such as clicking and dragging, and navigate apps displayed as floating windows in a 3D space. VisionOS also supports virtual keyboards, Siri, and compatibility with external Bluetooth peripherals such as the Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and gamepads. Apple assures that “hundreds of thousands of familiar iPhone and iPad apps” will be compatible with visionOS.
One of the most notable features of the Apple Vision Pro is the integration of advanced neurotechnology. According to Sterling Crispin, a neurotechnology prototyping researcher who worked on the product, the device uses AI models to predict a user’s cognitive states while experiencing virtual reality scenarios. These predictions are based on a number of measurements, including eye tracking, electrical brain activity, heart rate, muscle activity, blood density in the brain, blood pressure, and skin conductance. Apple Vision Pro can anticipate a user’s emotions, such as curiosity, mind-wandering, anxiety, attention, or recall of past experiences. Remarkably, the technology even enables the headset to predict a user’s intended click before they physically perform the action.
Apple plans to release the Apple Vision Pro for $3,499, making it available for purchase in early 2024.

“Hey ChatGPT, finish this building”
A billboard on a building under construction in Antwerp, Belgium, reads:
“AI can do a lot. But AI can’t finish this building on the Keyserlei in Antwerp. AI can’t fix a leak or install a heating system neither. 👨💻
Crafts(wo)men are here to stay, and they deserve to be recognized. Their skills are simply irreplaceable. 👨🏭”
Impact, an employment agency focused on construction and technical professionals, explained the creative on their LinkedIn page.
New Art Forms Created by AI
A Twitter thread exploring new forms of art that have been created with AI models: from city maps based on the emotional experiences of the locals to sculptures made of with suspended nanoparticles that interact with light.
Someone asked ChatGPT to create new art forms that humans haven't invented yet.
